Visit Hot Springs to release trading cards featuring 150th Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan

HOT SPRINGS — Visit Hot Springs is joining in the celebration of Mystik Dan’s Kentucky Derby win by releasing 30,000 trading cards featuring the 3-year-old bay colt during the race.

A caption on the back of the cards mentions the local connections of “ordinary Arkansans” as well as the accomplishments of the millionaire horse, which include a win of the Southwest Stakes and a third-place finish in the Arkansas Derby.

“It’s just an exciting time for Hot Springs and for Arkansas to have somebody that had local ownership in the horse that wins the Kentucky Derby,” Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, said.

Previous Visit Hot Springs trading cards featuring racing have included cards for Smarty Jones, Zenyatta, American Pharoah and Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel.

There have also been cards featuring the city’s connection to former President Bill Clinton, the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Sister City program, Arrison said.

“We’re trying to set up the printing date right now, and then we’re trying to figure out when we’re going to hand them out to the public,” he said, noting the cards will be free to the public.

Similar to those released in the past, there will be a color photo of Mystik Dan on the front with information on the back about him and visiting the Spa City, Arrison said. The information will include the owners of the horse — Lance and Bobbi Jo Gasaway, Banks and Lisa Hamby, Brent and Sharilyn Gasaway, and Scott and Katie Hamby.

“We’ve got Hot Springs owners,” he said, referring to the Hambys. “The trainer who won the [Kentucky] Oaks and has a house here in Hot Springs. I mean, what a great story, and Hot Springs is a part of it. The Hambys, local boys who’ve done very well. It’s amazing to me that, if you remember, they’re the ones who donated some of the money for the Babe Ruth statue in honor of their father. Now this horse is named after their father.”

The Gasaways are from Star City/Gould, the release said.
